In Hoc Signo Vinces

These are photos documenting some woodcut posters I installed at Justin Hoover's space, "The Garage", in SF in 2004. The phrase references the legend of Constantine's conversion in which he received revelation that he would conquer through the sign of the cross. After witnessing the first several years of Bush's presidency, I felt like he was the modern Constantine: a crusader and conqueror who exploited religion to advance and justify his imperial ambition. Beyond the religiously tinged talk about things like 'evil', this administration has also draped itself in the equally non-rational rhetoric of patriotism. We are to believe that these wars are just and necessary because it's our duty as god-fearing Americans to fight evildoers. Just like these donkeys and elephants, we should all get in line and face right, lest we be branded impious and un-American.
